Thanks to a good education at SACS, hard work and a fair share of luck, I have reached a stage in my life where my family are taken care of and I am in a position to give back to society and do my small part in helping others. The Shaw Mind Foundation - “lifting the lid on Mental Health” - is my primary focus for the next period of my life:
THE SHAW MIND FOUNDATION & TRIGGER BOOKS -
The Shaw Mind Foundation's common goal is to significantly reduce suicide across the world within 10 years. We do this by developing innovative ways to support children and the next generation to flourish and cope with the emotional demands of modern day life, and by supporting businesses to shape positive mental health and wellbeing in the workplace.
In 2016, The Shaw Mind Foundation set up Trigger, a global trade publishing house devoted to opening conversations about mental health. We tell the stories of people who have suffered from mental illnesses and recovered, so that others may learn from them.
THE ESPEY FAMILY & FRIENDS SCHOLARSHIP,
SOUTH AFRICAN COLLEGE SCHOOL, CAPE TOWN
The Espey family is pleased to provide a full scholarship - covering Boarding, school fees and all other requirements - for a worthy candidate from a disadvantaged background. The criteria for selection are that the candidate must be reasonably bright, like sport and possess healthy ambition.
Since 1950 some 14 members of the Espey family (including some at present!) and many friends have enjoyed or are enjoying the advantage of a great SACS education. We feel it is time to give back and help find future leaders in South Africa. If you would like to know more or to join in this worth cause please get in touch.
The first Espey Scholar, starting January 2019, is Tulile Dodwana, seen here with his parents. They live in a small, rural village in the Transkei, Eastern Cape.
In addition I am delighted to support a number of small charities which are making a significant difference to the lives of people less fortunate, here in the UK as well as in Zambia (my place of birth) and India.
BAG BOOKS -
Can you imagine a world without books in it? That is the reality for thousands of people with profound learning disabilities.
JUST A DROP -
Giving villagers in Zambia access to a water supply that is sustainable and will provide water for many years to come.
TUJATANE, TONGABEZI TRUST SCHOOL -
“One child, one teacher, one book, one pen can change the world.” Malala Yousafzai said that, and Tujatane School near Livingstone is evidence of it.
MY NAME IS KUMAR -
MY NAME IS KUMAR supports children and families from begging communities in Tamil Nadu, Southern India, enabling the education and development of children who would otherwise be forced onto the streets.
